Locations
Neutrals + Textures
Neutral tones for island photos are my go-to. It complements the location without drawing too much attention away from where it should be. I recommend sticking with neutral solid colors for families and couples. You can add some flare into it by adding some textured pieces, like a chunky sweater, a long flowing dress, or something with a knitted pattern. If you want to go the pattern route, I would recommend something with a small pattern to it. Nothing too loud or bright.
For the Guys
I always recommend putting the men in a solid button-up/collared shirt with khaki pants or shorts (jeans also look great). If you don't want to go the khaki color route, I recommend just making sure they are in solid colors. It seems to be more visually appealing for the males to be in solid colors and then their partner has a wider range of options for their outfit. Staying away from loud and busy patterns is also something to keep in mind since that can make the photos appear too busy. Consider putting the guys in very light colors if our session is in the summertime. The Oki heat can get HOT, and the last thing you want is sweat marks showing through a shirt.
Pops of Color
Pops of color in outfits can be BEAUTIFUL. Yellows, reds, blues, maroons are all colors I've come to love while shooting on the island. Make sure that when your planning pops colors into your outfits to balance them out with neutrals. For example, say mom wants to wear a yellow dress. I would put dad in a white button-up and have the kiddos wear creams or something with a small yellow pattern on it. I would stay away from putting everyone in matching outfits/one solid color. You want some diversity to break it up, without appearing like your all one block of color. You can check out my Pinterest board above for some ideas!
Wear what makes you feel comfortable!
All in all, wear what makes you feel comfortable! The worst thing is showing up to a session in something you don't want to wear. It can make you feel uncomfortable, and that's the last thing we want. I can give tips all day, but if you have something in mind, go for it. In the end, these are your photos, and I want you to be happy with what you're wearing!
